A Higher Thought for Today
” I am going to feel my emotions today and refuse to run when I begin to feel sad and uncomfortable.
Accepting a depression is the opposite of being victimized by it, since it is a choice not to run in panic, not to be frightened into virtual paralysis. Think of it this way: When we are truly afraid, we can in no way be said to accept our fear; the minute we do, the fright eases. So with depression. When we accept it, the terror lessens.
I used to stuff my feelings when I ran into a situation that frightened me. I also would refuse to experience any emotion that would cause me to feel uncomfortable. I am finding that the more I express myself and share with others the feelings of sadness which seemed to have plagued me since birth, the more I feel cheered and hopeful. The opposite of fear is faith. In this program of recovery I need to keep in touch with my Higher Power and keep a daily dialogue going with this Power so that I will continue to grow in hope and health. Fear keeps depression alive and growing. My faith allows me to risk a life without sadness even though my inclination is to seek the comfort of the unchanging sadness.”

A HIGHER THOUGHT FOR TODAY
I am going to think of my inner most thoughts as stepping stones to a better and more positive way to live my life.
“In the ancient secret Gnostic Gospels Jesus is reported as saying, ‘If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is in you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.'”(6)
CLARIFICATION OF THOUGHT
My sad thoughts which I continually run around in my mind keep me enslaved to inaction and a feeling of being trapped. I want to let these thoughts out so that I will be able to look at them and see them for what they are — the empty fears that have no power when placed out in the light of day. I believe that the more I express my fears to another, the less powerful they are and the less control they have over my life.
I am going to accept the fact that I have every right to be part of this universe and I am going to do everything in my power to achieve a sense of security and happiness for myself. The first step where “We admitted that we were powerless over depression and that our lives had become unmanageable” is what will free me in time from the prison of my depression.
When we get in touch with what we fear, we can get in touch with ourselves. By doing this, we find a way out of the cold and lifeless sadness that we call depression.
God, please come to us and dwell within us that you might create in us the strength that we need to bring us forth what is within us. This means both those pleasant and unpleasant thoughts.”

BEST WAY TO EAT AN ELEPHANT? ONE BITE AT A TIME!
I will think only those thoughts that today reinforce my self-worth!
“…try to live one day at a time as it’s a lot easier. As someone once said, if you want to eat an elephant the best way is one bite at a time.”
I desire to be part of God’s plan today by staying active in my own recovery from depression. The more I give of myself without reservation to its leading, the more I am able to free myself from my feelings of isolation and deadening fear.
My fears keep me living in my tomorrows and in my past yesterdays. Fear is the foundation of my depression. I am becoming less fearful the more I attempt to live one day at a time and have this day lived with hope.
Thoughts leads to feelings, feelings lead to moods and moods lead to behavior. I want to think that my life will improve today by the active role that I am taking in my own recovery.
God, we believe that you will not allow me to receive more than I can handle.”
